Can Toothpaste Get Rid of Hickeys? A Dermatologist Weighs In

Understanding Hickeys and Their Duration

Have you ever wondered if toothpaste can remove hickeys? While there are numerous videos on the internet suggesting toothpaste as a solution, we spoke to a dermatologist to get the real scoop on whether it’s effective or not.

Dr. Priyanka Kuri, a Consultant Dermatologist at Aster Whitefield Hospital, explains how hickeys develop and offers advice on the best ways to get rid of them. So, let’s dive in!

Firstly, what exactly is a hickey and how long does it last? A hickey, also known as a love bite, is a reddish or purplish mark that appears on your skin after a passionate moment. It is caused by sucking or kissing that breaks blood vessels underneath the skin. Dr. Kuri notes that hickeys, essentially bruises, usually fade within 1 to 2 weeks as the body absorbs the pooled blood. However, the duration can vary based on the severity of the hickey and an individual’s healing process.

The Myth of Toothpaste for Hickeys

Now, let’s address the myth surrounding toothpaste and hickeys. Contrary to popular belief, toothpaste does not have any proven scientific backing for the treatment of hickeys. While some people believe that its cooling effect might help, Dr. Kuri advises that toothpaste cannot remove hickeys.

There are other methods, such as compressions and Vitamin K-rich ointments, that can help heal a hickey faster. If you still want to try using toothpaste, there are some things to keep in mind. Mint-flavored toothpaste can potentially worsen skin irritation due to its allergenic effects. It’s crucial to use only a small amount of toothpaste to avoid excessive dryness and potential burning sensations on the skin. Also, limit the application to a maximum of two hours to prevent further skin irritation.

How to Remove Hickeys

While most hickeys will fade on their own, there are remedies that can speed up the healing process and alleviate any discomfort. However, it’s important to remember that everyone’s skin is different, so results may vary. Here are some hacks to try:

  1. Concealing techniques: Various makeup techniques can help hide hickeys.
  2. Cold compress: Applying a cold compress to the hickey can reduce swelling and promote healing.
  3. Vitamin K-rich creams: These creams can help enhance the body’s reabsorption of the pooled blood.
  4. Pain relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers can alleviate any pain or discomfort associated with hickeys.

Always remember to do a patch test before trying any home remedies or creams on your skin to check for sensitivity or potential allergies.
