A woman can go through emotional upheaval before, during, and after her pregnancy. Commonly known as maternal depression, it is highly likely to affect child development. Around 2 percent of pregnant women who visit the OPD experience depressed thoughts during their pregnancies and may need professional care and therapy. Becoming a mother is a remarkable event, but it can also lead to a number of emotional challenges. Maternal depression, also known as anti-partum depression, can cause persistent bouts of sadness, mood swings, and sobbing fits. These women are more vulnerable and prone to experiencing mood swings or postpartum depression after delivery. It is essential for the family members and loved ones to take responsibility during this period to prioritize the mental well-being of these women. Factors such as lack of awareness, lack of time, excessive workload, and lack of support should be addressed. Prioritizing mental health during the recovery period results in overall well-being in women.

How can poor mental health during motherhood affect parenting?

Maternal depression can have a significant impact on child development. Children of mothers with depression may experience lowered cognitive, social, and academic functioning. Those who come from a mother with a history of depression are at least two or three times more likely to have mood disorders and adjustment issues. Even in infancy and toddlerhood, children of depressed mothers may exhibit more fussiness, less responsiveness to facial and vocal expressions, increased inactivity, and heightened stress hormones compared to infants of non-depressed mothers. A parent’s state of well-being can influence the ways in which care is provided and how available the parent is, thus affecting the child’s attachment, sense of trust, and security. It is important for other adults to provide support and care to help modulate the effect of a parent not being well. Otherwise, a child may feel worried and anxious, unsure about what is happening and how to help or support.

It is crucial to address maternal depression and prioritize mental health for the well-being of both the mother and the child.
