Exploring the Efficacy of Homeopathic Remedies for Psoriasis Treatment

Psoriasis: A Common Skin Disease

Psoriasis is a common skin disease that can affect people of all ages. It is estimated that at least 100 million people worldwide are affected by psoriasis, with a reported prevalence ranging between 0.09 and 11.43 percent, according to the World Health Organization. This makes it a serious health problem that needs attention.

Understanding Psoriasis

If you notice dry, scaly, crusty pink-colored lesions on your skin, there is a possibility that you have psoriasis. Dr. Renu Paul, Senior Consultant – Homoeopathy at Accord Superspeciality Hospital, Faridabad, explains that psoriasis is an autoimmune disease where the body starts attacking its own tissues. The areas most commonly affected are the knees, elbows, and scalp. Psoriasis tends to flare up for weeks or months and then subside on its own. The symptoms include patchy rashes with colors like shades of purple with gray scale or pink or red with silver scale, and highly dry skin that can crack and bleed.

Can Homeopathic Remedies Help Treat Psoriasis?

A study conducted in 2018 involving 70 patients found that homeopathy can be used for psoriasis treatment. The study, published by the International Journal of Homeopathic Sciences, showed positive results. Another study published by the Complementary Medicine Research in June 2023 also showed that homeopathic medicines were more effective than placebos in treating psoriasis. It is important to note that these remedies should be used under the guidance of a homeopathic doctor. Here are a few examples of homeopathic remedies that can be used for psoriasis:

  1. Graphites: Used for people with leathery, cracked skin that has sticky discharge or blood.
  2. Mezereum: Used when there are thick and crusty plaques under the scab on the skin.
  3. Arsenic Iodatum: Helpful when the skin is covered with inflamed patches and scales, causing unbearable itching.
  4. Sulphur: Effective for severe itching and burning in psoriatic skin lesions.
  5. Petroleum: Used when deep cracks bleed, accompanied by itching, painful and hard fissures, and a crawling sensation on the affected skin.

Managing Psoriasis and Stress

Psoriasis is often linked to stress, so it is beneficial to practice stress-reducing techniques such as yoga. It is also essential to avoid scratching the affected area and keep your nails short to prevent further irritation. Homoeopathic medicines have shown positive results in psoriasis treatment, but the duration of treatment varies depending on the severity and duration of the disease. If you have any other health issues, such as diabetes, along with psoriasis, it is important to share this information with your homeopathy doctor to ensure appropriate treatment.
