Mulethi: A Natural Home Remedy for Hyperpigmentation and Skin Lightening

Introduction

Mulethi, also known as licorice, is a popular herb in Ayurveda. It offers numerous health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-aging, wound healing, rejuvenating, and immune-enhancing properties. A study published by the National Library of Medicine in 2013 revealed that licorice extract can help improve hyperpigmentation. In this article, we will explore the use of mulethi for skin lightening and its benefits, as explained by Ayurvedic expert Dr. Lakshmi Varma K.

Benefits of Mulethi

Mulethi is extensively used in Ayurvedic formulations due to its wide range of benefits. According to Dr. Varma, mulethi helps improve eyes, hair, brain, and skin health. It is useful in managing conditions like fever, sore throat, allergies, and skin diseases. In Indian households, it is commonly used for sore throat remedies.

1. Prevents Sun Damage to Skin

Mulethi helps treat sunburns, protects the skin from UV rays, and fades dark spots caused by sun exposure. It aids in restoring the skin’s natural color.

2. Reduces Wrinkles

Thanks to its anti-aging, rejuvenating, and antioxidant properties, mulethi helps restore skin tone and minimize the appearance of wrinkles.

3. Helps Minimize Scars

With its wound healing properties, mulethi promotes faster healing and prevents the formation of dark scars after injuries, keeping the skin blemish-free.

4. Cures Skin Conditions

Mulethi possesses anti-fungal, anti-microbial, anti-toxic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, which make it beneficial in managing various skin ailments such as eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, and fungal infections.

5. Prevents Acne and Soothes Inflammation

The anti-inflammatory, anti-toxic, and antioxidant properties of mulethi help remove toxins from the skin, preventing acne formation. It also soothes irritation and burning sensations caused by acne or environmental irritants.

Using Mulethi for Skin Lightening

Mulethi has been a part of Indian skincare practices for centuries, as it helps enhance complexion and lighten the skin. According to Dr. Varma, it is an effective remedy for hyperpigmentation and melasma. You can consume mulethi with milk or apply it as a face pack.

Tips for Using Mulethi

You can incorporate mulethi into your skincare routine by adding it to face packs or consuming it with milk. Here are some easy methods suggested by Dr. Varma:

1. Yashtimadhu Ksheerapaka

Prepare a milk decoction by adding one teaspoon of mulethi and one-fourth teaspoon of turmeric to a glass of milk. Drink it at night to purify the blood and combat skin conditions.

2. Yashtimadhu Face Packs

– Mulethi powder with turmeric and rose water face pack helps fight acne and inflammation.
– Mulethi powder mixed with kumkumadi oil is beneficial for dry skin and dark spots.
– Mulethi powder combined with milk and multani mitti (fuller’s earth) is a good home remedy for dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
– Mulethi powder with sandalwood powder works well for hyperpigmentation and oily skin.

Dr. Varma recommends using mulethi face packs for at least 3 to 6 months for optimal results. External use of mulethi is generally safe on a daily basis, but for internal use, it is important to consult an expert and follow the proper dosage. Pregnant women, individuals with high sugar levels, or those taking medications for high blood pressure should exercise caution when using mulethi. However, for most people, mulethi is an effective home remedy for various skin problems, including hyperpigmentation.
